involvement.....
We had noticed over the course of our first week, how little the Ukrainian refugees were involved in the process of the food tent. We thought we would try to see if there was a way to change this. I was on the fruit bit, chopping away at an apple (we make massive fruit salads). I looked at the woman in the line waiting for food, gesturing and trying as best as I could, to suggest she helped us. She leapt at the opportunity. Over the week more have become involved, including a young lad of about six filling cups with fruit juice!!
It's a small thing, but it has made a difference in the way the fruit section works. For example the Ukrainian volunteers are able to explain how it works and there is a lot less pushing and pulling and shouting. Having lost practically everything, it's good to see them take a bit of ownership of this section.
The afternoon was spent talking with refugees, and linking into our sponsors. We come away from this really stunned at the level of emotional pain that the refugees carry. There is rarely a conversation that doesn't end in tears, be it man, woman or child, when discussing the choices that they have to make.
