Children are better than governments
The picture was given to Ania, age 7, by an English schoolboy at Manchester Airport when she arrived with her parents this morning.
Meanwhile, Bob and I were sent a text warning late last night about something that would happen this morning:
"Pay attention!
Tomorrow at 08:41 there will be an air-alarm in the city.
It's about the remembrance of the airplane crash at Smoleńsk.
Refugees might be afraid.
Explain them why this is happening."
We thought it might be one of these rumours that go around on social media. But no, at the exact time, there was a very loud, prolonged siren, maybe for about 2 minutes. I've never heard an air raid siren - it was the eeriest sound. I quickly sent a couple of texts to the Ukrainians we know to reassure them of what was happening.
Sofiia replied:
"At first I was scared, the children thought the tanks were going. But then we were explained. It was very scary."
I wondered, could the remembrance not have been done a bit differently this year?
I've just been sent a photo of little Ania in a pink Tinkerbell night dress that was given to her when she arrived in Trawden. She looks as lovely as ever and, already, very different from the withdrawn, anxious little girl I said goodbye to in the food tent yesterday.
Wonderful for you to see one family settled, congratulations 👍
