Upcycling...
Bob saw someone dumping this tricycle in the bin last night so he rescued it, gave it a shower and we took it to the refugee centre today. People at the centre were very grateful for something that was going to be thrown away. In general, Ukrainians are grateful and thank us often, whether refugees or just people who live here. it can make us feel awkward because we don't need to be thanked - but it seems that they are just glad not to be forgotten by other countries.
The railway incidentally, was for children - it ran all the way around the large park.
The rest of the day was variously spent. Bob rearranged his English lessons for adults to a better venue at the library near the refugee centre, where children of students will have space to hang out.
We liased with volunteers in MAD (Make a Difference) Foundation, a sponsor in Barrowford, East Lancashire, and a refugee family - 2 sisters and their 2 sons, who want to escape constant bombing in Kharkiv. It could be possible for an evacuation next week for them, hopefully to Lviv if their visas can be sorted in time (They seem to be coming through much quicker with the new App - the latest was a record 23 hours!). They will then have a lift to the airport in Krakow, and fly to Leeds or Manchester. But all this happened because of a chance sharing of our number.
MAD Foundation is a charity that runs on very few volunteers, and a lot of hard work and commitment, including from volunteer drivers. Most are probably half our age - at least! - but we have in common that we came here to try to make a difference.
