It has been another learning curve...
having our Ukrainian families moving in with us. We had no first hand experience of the challenges that face people moving here. What you think would be easy isn't. Opening a bank account faces many hurdles.....it will be at least two weeks before our guests will get their bank account. Imagine not having your debit card ....or being able to easily access your money. They now have to get a biometric visa certificate to open a bank account. This is only available in Manchester or Leeds near us in order to open an account.....and you have to go in person to get these. And the children have to have them too. How difficult could this be if they don't have access to help?
However, the welcome payment worked well. It gives a buffer. Also access to language support seemed to work well.
Our guests have noted already how friendly It is in the area. And the peace and tranquility.
Today I helped with getting school uniforms sorted. If I never have to do this again in my life it will be too soon. :)
The afternoon was lovely. We were able to connect with another Ukranian family in Colne who we helped arrive here, along with their sponsors. We then went on to the Colne rythm and blues festival that is currently on.
One of the best bits of the day though was making bacon butties for our families at 9:00pm. A fitting end to a long day. Sitting around a table, sharing stories and pictures of their lives in Ukraine. We are so happy that they are in our home.....as long as I never have to go school shopping again!!!!.
