Never make assumptions...
As we were handing out the fruit today, we offered an older woman a bag of fruit and she replied in perfect English, "thank you." It turned out that this 76 year old woman had been an interpreter and English lecturer. We spent some time with her and her daugter. They had come from Socii, in the southeast of the country, and moved to the refugee centre after their house was destroyed. She said that she had never been abroad, but she had always wanted to visit England. We listened to their stories. We also told her about the Homes for Ukraine sponsorship scheme and she thought she might like to make use of it. We will follow up with her tomorrow
That she is having to make decisions like this is beyond comprehension really. If anyone knows of a sponsor please let us know.
Today we said goodbye to two people who have been attending the English lessons and who will be moving to Uckington on Monday. It was an emotional goodbye.....we loved them because in one of the lessons we did shopping and they had champagne on their list :)
Through our contacts we were also able to facilitate sleeping accommodation for 9 refugees coming from the east. It's these contacts that we try to develop that allows different aid organisations to support the refugee effort.
The picture below is of Russian tanks that have been destroyed by the Ukrainian army....they were on display in the main square in Lviv. Stange, oh so very strange.
