"Слава Україні" - "Slava Ukrayini"

"Slava Ukrayini"" (Glory to Ukraine") is what this goatherd couple shouted when we said that we are English. This is a constant refrain here and meant absolutely. We were walking on a hot road beside the river by our nearest village, which actually translates as Dubai.

Lots of unaccompanied children have arrived at the holiday camp this morning, and had a lunch of kasha (buckwheat) and sausages in the large dining area. Afterwards, they were marched outside, and there has been a lot of shouting through a megaphone, blowing of a whistle and organising children into various activities outside. It looks like they may be going to the river for a less organised paddle or swim, just, as the river is very low.

Some older people have arrived, too. We wonder how the limited facilities of the camp will cope with all these people. On our floor there is only 1 toilet, 1 wash basin and 1 shower for about 30 people. And a small kitchen that is almost constantly in use. As I lay awake on our uncomfortable bed settee on the first night, I thought of all the people sharing one room in the refugee centres we have seen, and the reality dawned that having a private room is, actually, a luxury.

Also, we wonder about the home lives of these people. If many of them are from areas on, or near, "line zero," as the front line is called, maybe they spend a lot of their time in cellars and basements. We'll try to find out a bit more about them.

So now we have children for English lessons, but the first class is not until the strange time of 8pm because they are not free before then. Afterwards there is a campfire so I thought it would be best to write the blog early and let Bob report tomorrow.

We have had another first experience - drawing water from a well! It is very cold and tastes, well (no pun intended!), just of fresh water, which is probably what it should taste like.

Finally, some good news, some of our food that was taken has reappeared in the fridge, after a few subtle enquiries and comments, made on our behalf, that we are volunteers.
