Some thoughts on our eve of departure...

First the United Nations. It's supposed to be really good at providing aid etc. Here in Ukraine it's seen as a bit of a waste of space and many Ukranians mock the organisation, going so far as to ironically naming a non alcoholic beer after it.

Our observations of the UN are that these pristine cars and vans are parked outside expensive hotels, and instead of helping to deliver aid and help evacuations, they remain parked and do nothing. In fact, one refugee reported that the UN fled as soon as war was imminent in their town.
The only time I have seen a UN vehicle on the road, is when I saw one woman official being chauffered somewhere.

We have learnt that volunteers, people and organisations that help come in various guises. But the effective ones are not necessarily about size. We have come upon individuals who have made an enormous difference, given their passion and ability to see things though. The same for small organisations.

Maybe though, more than anything, is that these individuals need to work together, whilst keeping their sense of individuality to achieve the best results.

So, for example, this week we heard of an individual who was able to donate children's books, based in Kiiv. We also knew of a person who needed children's books in Odesa. We put V and V in contact and hopefully the books will be delivered.

Likewise the fruit project would not work without all those that help us. Including those that donate.

So for all that help we have received, to those that have shared their time and friendship and laughter with us, to the people of Lviv who have been so kind to us.....we humbly say thank you.

And we will be back.
