Aid van coming through.....
Driving in Ukraine, or more specifically Lviv, makes driving in Italy seem like the epitome of sensible driving. Basically, there are rules, but they are mainly just a general principle. So I often drive the van on the principle of "aid van coming through!" (Polish owner of van look away now.) And it seems to work. An aid van gets a little leeway. However, traffic in Lviv really is awful. It seems like a large car park at times.
Nevertheless, we were able to do an aid transfer from our Polish organisation, one van to another. We will be setting off again on 3rd January.
Today we spent a small amount of the money donated on 2 x 15kg bags of dried dog food. The situation here for animals in some areas is truly shocking. We see far too many dead dogs at the side of the road. Other dogs hardly able to stand, trembling and cold, and dying before our eyes. Heartbreaking. But there are people here trying to protect animals, e.g. with rescuing dogs and cats from war zones, and finding shelters or rehoming them.
Some people may question why we are spending this money in this way, but I say, why wouldn't you? These dogs and cats give so much solace to people, especially children. And, often, people have to choose between spending money on pet food and feeding themselves. A 15kg bag of dry dog food costs £17 here.
The choices we make in buying things here are never easy. We do the best we can, guided by what people tell us they most need. But, believe us, your donations make a difference.
