REQUEST FOR DONATIONS
After our brief period away from Ukraine, we find the situation in the refugee centre in Lviv little altered. If anything, things have worsened. Winter is fast approaching and few of the accommodation units have any heat. Whereas, during the summer, there was the opportunity to open doors and let in fresh air, that is no longer an option. The children in the centre are unable to access education and rely on receiving some schooling through UNICEF provision. Many refugees are still arriving in Lviv on a daily basis and resources are stretched.
The other area of concern is that of logistics around humanitarian aid provision. We find that there are very large warehouses stacked high with aid; however, there is not sufficient transport to move it to where it's needed. There are sufficient drivers but not enough vehicles to meet the high demand.
The Homes For Ukraine sponsorship scheme is still running; however, the number of sponsors available has diminished significantly, just when the need is greater than ever.
We hope to be able to continue to provide support in the areas mentioned above. We will continue to be a presence in the refugee centre and, with donations, will continue to provide food to supplement that provided by World Central Kitchen.
We will also continue to support UNICEF in its teaching programme by providing English lessons to the children of the refugee centre. We will also provide English lessons for adults.
We will endeavour to assist in the movement and logistics of humanitarian aid. There is a desperate need, especially with winter coming, for support to get aid to areas such as Kharkiv, Mykolaiv, Zaporizhzhia, etc, where many are without the basics of heating, food and running water. We will continue to help to identify people that may need assistance to flee the war and, working with our partner organisation, MAD Foundation, arrange for their evacuation.
Finally, we will continue with our work under the Homes For Ukraine scheme. We seem to be still able to identify sponsors in various areas and will continue this.
We need your support, back in the UK (and not forgetting our American colleagues), in order to continue to do this work effectively. We would love to raise a sufficient amount to buy a second hand van in the UK and bring it over here, where it could be used to deliver aid and help with evacuations. We are aware that this is a big 'ask' at this time, given the challenges for everyone due to Putin's war. Please donate whatever you can; no matter how small, collectively, they make a big difference. Here in Ukraine, many individuals are doing their small bit to help the war effort and it is this, coupled with international support, which is turning the tide of the war and which Putin never foresaw.
