The way forward

Having done the run to Marhanets and Zaporizhzhia, we clearly see that there is a use for our time here in Ukraine. The initial response to the Homes for Ukraine sponsorship scheme was very good. In reality this is no longer the case, even though we occasionally have new sponsors coming forward.

The best use of our time, in the circumstances, will be in obtaining and delivering aid to where it is most needed. This is a significant change of direction for us and we are not unaware of the increased risks. However, we believe that the risks are outweighed by the benefits, especially that of being able to bring vulnerable women and children to a place of safety.

We will still do what we can to support the refugee centre in Stryiskyi Park, Lviv, including making links between Ukrainian families wishing to come to England and sponsors. We're happy that we will soon be able to settle another family into a 3-bedroom house in our road in Trawden.

We'll also try to facilitate partnerships between Leeds and Lviv Universities, and between Park High School and a school here. We're also aware that there is still a need to obtain more books in Ukrainian for children, including for the refugee community in Poland.

If people ask, is what we do here worth it? Look at the picture of this woman. All she had left was in her two hands, being bombed out of her home. We were able to take her to safety. And an unknown future.
